If they are all in fact Clancy brothers, why are two of them wearing different village patterns in their Irish knit sweaters? Did their parents ship them out at a young age and they only reconnected after college? Ya know, I am starting to believe that they are not in fact brothers. The sweater doesn't lie!!

^ I wouldn't go into any pubs in Ireland with that attitude.

U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky (1983)

I really haven't been listening to much Irish music this year (especially compared with past years). Should be spinning the Chieftains or The Dubliners or Altan, but not really feelin' it today (I'm sure I will listen tomorrow)

So a bit of a cop out but hey U2 is Irish so :)

John Mayall - John Mayall Plays John Mayall (1965)

Cover_-_plays_john_mayall.jpg

Mayall's very first LP was recorded at Klooks Kleek, the hot jazz club in North West London. Joining the clean shaven Mayall were future rock fixtures John McVie and Hughie Flint. Mayall himself was a one man gang, singing and playing harmonica, cembalett, organ and 9 string guitar. As previews go, this one was a scorching harbinger of great things to come.

Ten Years After - Undead (1968)

Let's stay at Klooks Kleek to hear another blazing set, from Ten Years After. Look for the 2002 reissue which adds 4 songs to complete the show. Alvin Lee introduces "Spoonful" as "a number by 'Howlin' Wolf Clapton'". :D

Zoot Money's Big Roll Band - Zoot! (1966)

Here's another hot set from Klooks Kleek. Zoot (who named himself in tribute to sax legend Zoot Sims) was a mainstay in British music for many years, lending his bluesy Hammond organ to recordings by dozens of artists from The Animals to Widowmaker. He's no slouch in the vocal department either, standing with the best of the blue eyed soul contingent. This show must have brought down the house when he launched into a 6 minute medley of James Brown hits. On guitar we hear none other than Andy Summers, later of The Police.

Klooks Kleek was on the ground floor of the Railway Hotel in NW London. The building looks like this today:

It offered a very intimate musical experience, as evidenced by this picture of Ten Years After on the cozy stage:

Most of the big names from both sides of the Atlantic appeared here, including "Little" Stevie Wonder, Deep Purple and even Jimi Hendrix.

The club was located next door to the Decca studios, making live albums like this one a simple matter of stringing some cables out the door. Artists like Tom Jones and Lulu frequently dropped by to relax after their sessions.

Cream - Klook's Kleet (1966 ROIO)

1966-11-15-KLOOKS_KLEEK_CLUB-main-v2.jpg

This morning I found this one hiding in the vault. It presents the full set from November 15, 1966, which is the earliest show I'm aware of for the revolutionary power trio. They play everything at breakneck speed, especially Clapton. The ears of the lucky folks in attendance must have exploded as Cream burst the boundaries of first generation British blues.

Spelling obviously doesn't count when you're producing a gray market CD. Founder Dick Jordan named his jazz club after this 1956 album by jazz drummer Kenny "Klook" Clarke:

But he omitted the apostrophe, like so:

I had to go back and correct my own posts, so I can't be too hard on the bootleggers here.
