Television - Marquee Moon (1977)

Marquee Moon

Santana - Corazon (2014)

2987

I tried Santana's latest, Africa Speaks. It's masterful music with lots going on but it just wasn't doing much for me. This album reeks of Satana's latin style where Africa Speaks very much does not. I guess I was more in the mood for comfort than exploration.

What did you think of the music?
The faster tracks, like the lead off Oh My My My! are exactly what I used to listen to in my teens and 20's. My brain doesn't have that much adrenaline anymore but I much more enjoyed the slower tracks, like Lonely Since I Met Ya and Feeling Low. Firecracker Blues had an interesting old school vibe that I enjoyed. That track got saved to a playlist.

That's funny, because even though I liked it a lot, I found the album on the whole to be too polite and conventional sounding. I prefer things that are edgier and more experimental.

I don't disagree. The tracks that sounded like 1975 - conventional is almost the word, but they're not even really conventional - almost throwback. Every bar band has songs like that. And the slow ones I liked, you could definitely call them polite. I think it's why I liked them better.

I've noticed that about your choice of music. I occasionally listen to some random thing you're listening to. And you used exactly the words I would have to describe those albums -- experimental and edgy. Not that that's all you listen to, but you definitely like a challenge more than I do.

Threefifty ~ Gently Among the Coals (2017)

I dunno, but I find this album far more interesting than my peers on RYM. Maybe it's just not edgy or experimental enough.

RIYL: Red Sparowes, Mogwai. The Bandcamp link below mentions Rachel's. Yeah, I guess I can hear that, too.

Moonbabies - June And Novas (2000)

This one came over the transom and I really like the variety of sonic textures.

AMG sez:

Sporting a sophisticated and intelligently crafted sound, the Moonbabies' debut is an absolute modern pop success. Featuring studio-smart pop production, this Swedish duo injects electronic textures, drum loops, and various effects into the seemingly straightforward pop sensibilities. Sometimes coming off as a combination of the easygoing aesthetic of Toad the Wet Sprocket and the meticulous sheen of Garbage, this band provides a multi-pronged attack, bouncing from driving rock to moody musical interludes. As both Carina Johansson and Ola Frick share the songwriting, instrumental, and vocal duties, many sounds and moods are evoked, from the out of control (and tune) sprawl through the grungey "My Buddy Buddy" to the soft acoustic guitar coda "Winter Broken Time." Still, the majority fall in between, with Frick building many arrangements on top of his shimmering guitar hooks and using various atmospheric production tricks to create a densely enveloping sound. Overall, an impressive marriage of traditional indie pop and modern electronic production.

:4.0: on the Sam-O-Meter. Never a dull moment, as Rod might say.

Not on Spotify.
